Stuck In A Rut? The Six Ways You Can Spice Up Your Relationship

Whether you’ve been in a relationship with your partner for 3 months or 30 years, we all find ourselves in ruts from time to time.

You might not feel that same passion or spark you felt when you first were dating, or maybe you’re just running out of exciting things to do with each other. The good news is that these feelings are normal, and they don’t mean you’re not in a healthy relationship.

Both people in their early twenties and people in their fifties experience these problems within relationships. They’re extremely common, but they don’t have to be your experience. If you want to find that spice you cherished early in your relationship, try these 6 things that can bring even the stalest relationships back to life.

1. Explore somewhere new.

When you’re stuck in your daily habits and routines, it’s easy to feel things go cold in a relationship. You might not even realize it’s happening. Maybe when you were young you loved to go on weekend getaways or exotic vacations, but then life got in the way. These things are a normal part of aging, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get out there and enjoy life.

Having a new destination to go out and explore is a great way to get back in touch with each other. Start small if you can’t commit to a bigger vacation. Visit a nearby town for the weekend or even just book a hotel in your own neighborhood for a staycation. The key is to break free of your normal routine and try something new.

2. Touch more often.

If your only physical contact comes either inside the bedroom or when he or she is passing you a plate at dinner, it’s time to get snuggling. These smaller interactions form a big part of our overall feeling of intimacy. Try to make a point to touch your partner more often, whether that means holding hands in public or just curling up on the couch together to watch Netflix before bed. You might even get yourselves in the mood for more!

3. Try something new in the bedroom.

Many couples  report feeling unexcited in the bedroom, especially as they age with their partner. You might be afraid to try something new, or maybe you just have a hard time feeling that sexual chemistry that you experienced before. Both of these feelings are normal. Practice trying new things in the bedroom with your partner, even if that means just starting with baby steps.

Not sure where to begin? A sexy costume or new lingerie can be a great first step.  Aside from that, have an honest talk with each other about what you want out of your bedroom intimacy. You might be surprised with what you learn when you just sit down and chat about it.

4. Create habits together.

What’s better than doing things with your partner? Doing them every day. Create some nightly habits you do together to help you unwind after a long day. It’s easy to get stuck in your own habits and forget to include your partner, but you might be missing out on quality time worth spending together. Whether you shower together, cook together, or even just watch the same shows at night, these bring you closer.

5. Gain independence.

While it might seem counterproductive to separate yourself from your partner in an effort to bring yourself closer to him or her, it’s true that independence has its perks. Learning to develop your own hobbies and interests outside of your partner makes you a more attractive, well-rounded person. Plus, you can share these newfound interest with your partner to gain even more intimacy.

6. Don’t take them for granted.

Finally, the best way to spice up your relationship is to stop taking your partner for granted. As we’ve said, it’s easy to stop appreciating the little things you do for each other. How often do you smile at your partner or let them know why you appreciate them? These small moments add up, and they help your relationship gain value. You don’t have to go exceptionally out of your way to make an impact. Just look for new ways to show them you care.

It’s easier than you think to bring that spark into your relationship. We all know that relationships are hard work, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun along the way. Get to know your partner all over again with these ideas above.
