What you wear can say a lot about you and can even boost your confidence, so your outfit should be one of the main things you consider before a date. Here, Christopher Legard from luxury menswear retailer Joseph Turner gives us his expert style tips for a dating man over 50.
Your age should never affect your confidence — from Colin Firth to George Clooney, the over 50s club is full of well-dressed men known for their classic and sophisticated style. When it comes to dating, your outfit is important and knowing how to pull together a style that works for you can sometimes be a difficult task. Luckily, I’ll be giving you my handy style tips so you can really dress to impress.
Tailor your outfit appropriately
Always dress for the occasion and activity. So, if you’re doing something more casual, like going to the cinema, it’s best to keep your clothing casual, too. For this, I’d suggest a neat shirt dressed down with a pair of jeans. You can smarten it up with a blazer if you need to.
For men over 50, the perfect pair of jeans can be tricky to find, but I’d advise that you stay away from skinny fit jeans and ‘distressed’ jeans with rips. Instead, opt for a plain slim fit, which can still look flattering but are a bit looser round the leg. In the winter, it’s best to stick to darker blues, but a nice beige pair can look great in the summer.
For more formal occasions, like a sit-down dinner, you can choose to swap the jeans for a pair of smart dress trousers and add a jacket. When it comes to dates, you want it to look like you’ve made an effort, so it’s better to over-dress than to be too casual.
I’d always recommend going smart with your footwear, so try a nice pair of brogues or Oxford shoes. These are appropriate for any occasion and can really smarten up a more casual outfit without making it look too formal.
Know how to accessorise
No outfit is complete without an accessory or two, and a nice belt can do wonders to smarten up your look. I’d always recommend that you wear a belt which matches your shoes, as this can tie everything together and avoid anything clashing. So, if you’ve opted for some shiny brown leather Oxfords, add a brown leather belt to complete your outfit.
Of course, a man of any age should find his own style and belts aren’t the only accessory you could consider. A smart pair of cufflinks or a pair of bold coloured socks are a great way to inject a bit of personality into your outfit. These can be subtle enough to show off your character without overwhelming the rest of your look.
Add the finishing touches
The night before your date is the perfect time to prepare all your finishing touches by having a shave and taking care of any other little grooming tasks. You should also clean and polish your shoes — remember, you can tell a lot about a person by the condition of their footwear.
Getting a fresh haircut can make you look a lot neater and can even give the impression of a fuller head of hair — perfect if you’re noticing a few more hairs getting washed down the shower drain!
Dates can be a daunting prospect, especially later in life. But, by following these easy style tips, you can relax, knowing you’re going to look and feel great!
