The first time I wore one of ’s pashas from The Ottoman Collection was when I went to dinner for ten at a friend’s house. Within the hour, four women at the dinner had bought one. Another time I met Helen at a café and she produced a new pasha from her bag for me to try on. The minute I put it on, the woman at the next door table demanded to know where she could find one immediately. Helen sold the one I was wearing to her there and then.
Helen’s pashas are so instantly covetable and desirable that it’s hazardous to go out in one as you risk being pressured into selling it and parting with it – it happens to Helen all the time. They are the easiest, fastest, most comfortable and elegant way of transforming any outfit and can be bundled up and bunged into an overnight bag or even a handbag. ‘Where East meets West’ and ‘Where passion meets purity’ are the Ottoman Collection’s taglines and they are exotic and colourful but their understated simplicity, quality of design and exquisite authentic textiles set them apart from the usual confused jumble of ethnic offerings.
Helen began designing the Ottoman Collection in response to the beautiful Ikat fabrics that she found in Turkey, where she has a house. They were instantly snapped up by the boutique at the Amanruya Hotel on the Bodrum Peninsula. From there she was asked to lay on a fashion show for British Polo Day at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, where she collected more fans and this year at the Giardinia Guardia in Verona. She has been busy ever since, creating collections for Thyme at Southrop, a luxury boutique hotel in the Cotswolds and The Opera Shop at Garsington and her pashas were quickly snapped up by cult boutique, Felt, on Chelsea Green.
The versatile pashas can be worn all the year round and she’s just designed a beautiful winter pasha, lined in British wool, which she describes as ‘luxurious, warm, sophisticated’ and perfect for wearing out and about: city, airport, resort, banquet and boardroom. ‘You will be noticed and admired,’ she promises – and I can absolutely vouch for that.
