The Cross in Clarendon Cross, W11, turns 20 today. Sam Robinson, 50, who owns and runs The Cross has been delighting her customers since 1996. Few independently owned boutiques have survived London’s constant rent hikes and fickle customers but Sam has built a devoted following due to her unerring eye for classic style and her ability to provide us not just with pricey ‘Wow! Factor’ but always with beautifully made, timeless clothes that defy age.
‘I dress women up to 90 and I’ve grown up with my customers,’ says Sam. ‘I’ve reached 50 alongside so many of my clients so I know exactly what they want. And now I’m dressing their daughters too. The best clothes are ageless. My customers are highly discerning individuals who want enduring quality and elegant classics with a twist. No-one wants to look boring so my job has been to seek out beautiful, wearable clothes that are also that little bit different to lift the spirits every time you put them on.’
To celebrate The Cross’s birthday, we’ve asked Sam Robinson to become our resident style guru and each month we’ll update you with her top five picks. Here are five items High50 loves that are guaranteed to enliven your autumn wardrobe:
1. The Coat : £258.00
This short, unstructured, wool mix coat from Belgian brand Bellerose is the perfect autumn coat and a steal at the price. We love how young and carefree it makes us feel with its combination of casual, forgiving, throw-it-on slouchiness and luxury – it has a gorgeous lining and feels warm, soft and beautifully enveloping to wear.
2. The Top: £151.00
There are many reasons why this utterly wearable Viscose top from Velvet is one of Sam’s best sellers – it’s colourful without being brash, it’s beautifully cut and flattering for all shapes (and covers the bum), it’s not see through, it’s machine washable and you just hang it up to dry. It’s a top you will wear again and again and again.
3. The Jumper: £154.00
This navy and rainbow jumper by Jumper 1234 is exactly what we’re all looking for – an affordable, good-quality, classic piece of clothing made from the finest cashmere with a colourful twist.
4. The Scarf: £120.00
Who can fail to like this Cross home brand wool scarf? It will brighten up any wardrobe with its beautiful pattern in warm pumpkin hues and earthy brown shades.
5. The Skirt: £405.00
OK, OK, we know it’s expensive but this Samantha Sung double-lined stretch silk pencil skirt is so beautiful and flattering that we had to include it. It also comes in a luscious shade of malachite. Sam wears it year round – in autumn and winter with boots and in the summer with flip-flops. It’s cross-seasonal and so wearable that it’s worth the investment.
And finally, because it’s their birthday, we had to include this for ‘Wow! Factor’:
The Cardigan: £515.00
Hand-made in Japan by Suzusan this hand-knitted, seamless cardigan is dyed using the Shibori technique applied to the softest, finest cashmere. It’s so beautiful it had customers gasping.
